7 Soldados de la Victoria (IV): Klarion

Página 3 de Klarion The Witch Boy #1 (DC, 2005) "From This World to That Which is to Come" por Frazer Irving.

All the script I’ve ever had from him have had gaps like these other texts which haven’t been written like a dialogue to be decided later. Or some of the panel descriptions were a little bit vague or kind of very broad, like with Klarion the Witchboy; he didn’t describe any of the animals that lived in Limbo-town, he said there are animals and I was like what kind? And he seemed to be kind of slightly put out that I actually asked him to tell me which ones he wanted and gave me a few examples off the top of his head and then I realised what he wanted was for me to contribute more than just drawing what he described. And basically every time I work with him since then his scripts have had room for me to kind of breathe and explore my own ideas and to interpret his ideas in many different ways.

The only sketch I’ve ever seen from him was a sketch of Klarion the Witchboy which I needed to use as a guide. He sent me some cover sketches for a different gig and I know I could use them or I could discard them because what he wants is for me to do my thing. He never sends me drawings and I don’t want to see them.

Aparecen Zatanna, Misty y Ali Ka-Zoom.

How I approached Zatanna is simply based on the images of the character in the comics over the years rather than what has been written of her character, and of course, much of it is coming from how Grant is writing her in this comic. The writer always sets the tone for what I draw on the page, and this is no different.

All I received really were Grant’s written descriptions and some dimensionscape sketches that he did for a couple of scenes in issue one, so there was plenty of design work for me to do, including a handful of new characters as well as revamping a few old ones. All in all that part of the project was a lot of fun.

Comixfan: Grant Morrison and Peter David each have a very distinctive style of writing that is quite different from the other. What do you find to be the most distinct difference between their writing styles to be?

Sook: It would be easier to specify the similarities. They're both comic scripts. That's it. Outside of that I'd say they're drastically different. Perhaps it's just the subject matter that calls for different styles but (X-Factor writer Peter) David seems to have written very straightforward "this is what needs to be on the page" type of scripts where Grant is really laying the foundation for an artist to build on. Both do their job very well and I enjoy working from either approach.

STEWART: That’s my process. If I don’t do the layouts digitally, I do rough thumbnails on a piece of paper and scan them in, convert it to a blue line and then print it off. It’s a process that I figured out a while ago, and it’s been pretty good. It allows me to tweak the layouts as much as I want before going to the final artwork. I tend to do most of my drawing in ink and keep the layouts as loose as possible, just for composition and pacing. I do a very minimal amount of black penciling.

Grant works sort of Marvel-style where he gives us a script that's somewhat rough and loose and doesn't have final dialogue, so you draw it and then he scripts it afterward. When we get the box of comps, I'm quite interested to read it because I can go through and see the places where what I've drawn has influenced the dialogue and what he's written, and that's really cool. That makes it feel a lot more collaborative than just mechanically executing what he's done.

I really enjoy working with Grant in that style because I enjoy the openness. The one problem of working with him sometimes is that there are times I read the final product and the dialogue is not what I thought it would be, so I go, "If I'd known that, I maybe would have drawn the scene differently." But I worked on the Apocalipstix, which is a book I created with my friend Ray Fawkes. For that he wrote it sort of like a movie script where the dialogue was there but he didn't do any page or panel breakdowns. He simply described what happened. From there, I had the freedom, say there was a car chase and a bus crashes, I had the freedom to draw 20 pages of that if I wanted, using my own instincts and my own sensibilities, I can get my own rhythm and sense of pace that I want rather than looking at a script and seeing Panel One: This Happens, Panel Two: This Happens, etc.

¿He dicho todos?

I needed to open up my drawing abilities more. I want to go into more expressive ways of drawing. Doing things that cannot be expressed properly in just pencil and expect an inker to understand what you are asking of them. It’s not fair to the inker and its not fair to the penciler. So to push myself into newer territories of open and free forms of drawing it was a necessity to start doing it myself. Over the last couple of years I've been doing all of my own inking on covers and about ninety percent of that last few issues of Promethea.

Grant's scripts have a chaotic feel and energy to them, at least this one did. So after working from very structured Alan Moore scripts for so long, I had to really step back for a minute and re-arrange my thinking. It wasn't long before I had a handle on things though. (...) After Alan’s very long writing form and structured script layout it was surprising when reading Grant's script that all of a sudden you could come across a half a page or so that would jump font size to like ten times larger for no apparent reason then go back to his standard size. Stuff like that. Good for a chuckle.

The other thing that I had to figure out was that Grant doesn't provide final dialogue until after he’s seen the art. This was difficult because I always design the art around the balloon placements. That would always help me figure out where I need to concentrate details and visual flow.
